Full Description

The excavations on the site of the Ro villa located early Ro gullies underlying the structure containing pottery, of IA culture. Substantial fragments of 2 situlate jars, both with slack angular shouders and one with finger tip decoration along the rim, were found. Perhaps C4-C3 BC, presumably residual in the early Ro gullies. The gullies themselves probably delimiting fields or paddocks, and are dated by Ro pottery to around 100 AD. (2)

The geophysical survey found that immediately to the south of a potential former building are more positive linear features, 2 to 6 nT/m, potentially associated with a large dipolar area -100 to 100 nT/m. These features may represent former enclosure features or settlement activity, likely associated with the potential villa immediately to the north. (3)

A long positive linear feature, aligned roughly northeast to southwest, 1 to 2 nT/m, is likely to represent part of a former cultivation trend seen further to the southeast within this field and within the field directly to the south-west. (3)

To the north of these features is a large amorphous positive feature, 6 to 8 nT/m, which may represent a pit, soil-filled hollow or former pond. There are a couple of positive linear features close to the large positive feature which may represent part of an enclosure around the positive feature. They could also represent drainage features or former stream channels. (3)

Scattered mostly randomly throughout the field are several weak and strong dipolar responses. The characteristic dipolar response of pairs of positive and negative ‘spikes’ suggest near-surface ferrous metal or other highly fired material in the topsoil. (3)
