Description

Railway viaduct. 1877. Designed by S. Abbot for the Great Northern Railway Co. Wrought iron with concrete and blue brick foundations and brick abutments. Stone dressings. 15 trestles, each comprising 12 round columns linked by interlaced ties. Corrugated iron decking. Latticed handrail. This building utilises a system of prefabricated lightweight construction patented by J. Warren and W. T. Manzoni in 1848. This was also used in the Crumlin Viaduct of the Taff Vale Railway, now demolished. Also listed under Ilkeston, Derbyshire. (NCC/js)
