HER Layers
Monuments & Elements
Monuments are our primary records. Each entry for a site on the HER has one of these and they are split into four main types Monuments, Elements, Buildings, Parks and Gardens. These records can have a parent/child relationship and/or be part of monument groups.
You may also notice that some records have both an monument and element record, this is because the Nottinghamshire HER uses a Monument/Element structure for the data, with Elements (Lxxxx) describing the archaeological evidence and Monuments (Mxxxx) describing what they represent.
Events
Event Records hold data on activities that have generated HER data. This can be from activity such as excavation, surveying, building recordings etc. Much of this is fed to the HER from the planning process but much also comes from community projects, HER enhancement, thematic research or individual research.
Listed Buildings
Listed Buildings are assessed and designated by Historic England, there are three grades of Listing, I,II* and II. We hold designation records for Listed Buildings with information obtained from Historic England. These records are associated with corresponding monument records which hold our own data such as photographs and reports.
Scheduled Ancient Monuments
Scheduled Ancient Monuments are assessed and designated by Historic England, there is one grade of designation. We hold designation records for Scheduled Ancient Monuments with information obtained from Historic England. These records are associated with corresponding monument records which hold our own data such as photographs and reports.
Registered Parks and Gardens
Registered Parks and Gardens are assessed and designated by Historic England, there are three grades of Listing, I,II* and II. We hold designation records for Registered parks and Gardens with information obtained from Historic England. These records are associated with corresponding monument records which hold our own data such as photographs and reports.
Registered Battlefields
We have one Registered Battlefield in Nottinghamshire at East Stoke. Registered Battlefields are assessed and designated by Historic England. These records are associated with corresponding monument records which hold our own data such as photographs and reports.
Conservation Areas
Conservation Areas are assessed and designated at a local level, this means they will usually be administered by the Local Planning Authority. In Nottinghamshire this is through our District and Borough Councils. We obtain information on boundary's directly from them to update the HER, however for up to date boundary information the relevant LPA should be the first port of call.
Base Map Layers
Sherwood Lidar
Two single-hillshade digital terrain models (DTM) are available to explore in the Nottinghamshire HER online mapping portal. The Sherwood Lidar (Hillshade NW Sun) is a view of the landscape with the natural features illuminated as though the sun is shining from the NW and the Sherwood Lidar (Hillshade NE Sun) is the view as if the sun was shining from the NE. The layer dates to survey work which was carried out in 2021.
Sandersons Map of 1835
In 1835, George Sanderson published his circular map 20 miles round Mansfield, which shows parts of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire with remarkable accuracy and detail. When the map is georeferenced and inputted into a GIS system, it is possible to see that the depictions of field boundaries, roads, and individual buildings are depicted with extraordinary precision when compared with earlier maps of the area
Ordnance Survey
The map is liked to Ordnance Survey base maps under licence to Nottinghamshire County Council. These maps are scaled to see more detail as you zoom in on a feature or area.
Aerial 2016
An Aerial photography layer is also available within the map. This is dated to 2016, you may find it useful when viewing our archaeological records to see where above ground features still remain.
