Description

Fire station. 1938. Additions c.1978. By Sir Owen Williams for the Boots Company. Reinforced concrete external frame with cantilever beams. Concrete plinth and roofs. Metal framed strip glazing and casements, higher central appliance house flanked by single storey parapeted addition. 3 bays wide by 8 bays deep. Front has central full-height doors flanked by single casements in set back wings. In each return angle, full-height glazing. Appliance house has clerestorey windows. Square hose tower has diagonal bracing with glass brick infill. Interior has glazed tile dado. The structure of this building is similar to that of Williams D6 building of the same date. (NCC/js)
