Description

Stable court, stable cottages and riding school. 1865. By A. Salvin for the third Earl Manvers. Plain and rockfaced ashlar and brick. Graduated slate roofs. Elizabethan Revival style. Plinth, first floor band, rebated eaves, shouldered coped gables with kneelers and ball finials. Windows are mullioned casements, some with hood moulds. 8 side wall and 5 ridge stacks. 2 and 3 storeys. 7/4 bays wide by 4 unequal bays deep. 4 ranges around square courtyard, plus adjoining cottages and riding school to north. Buttressed east front has projecting central gabled porch with octagonal flanking turrets, pepperpot domes and finials. Central round headed arch flanked by single lights. Above, to left, central gabled dormer flanked by single large bracketed dormers with round headed loading doors. To right, casement flanked by single lights. To right again, bracketed dormer and small gabled dormer. To their right, single casement. Projecting right gable has single casement and above, 2 casements. Above, central blank panel and above again, a round opening. Stable cottages, adjoining to north, 4 bays, have to east 2 doors each flanked by single casements. Above, 4 casements. Above again, 2 gabled cross eaves dormers. North gable has a casement on each floor. South front has central projecting wing with stepped shouldered double gable and a gable at each end. Off-centre pair of casements with stepped heads, flanked by single doors with segmental heads and beyond, single casements. Above, 2 casements and above again, to right, a casement. West front has projecting gable to left. 17 breathers. Above, to left, a casement. To right, 4 dormers. North front has 2 gabled wings and 2 hipped single storey lean-to additions. Adjoining head gardener's cottage and outbuildings, 2 storeys, 5 bays, have a coped gable with kneelers. Single bay 2 storey addition to west, late C19. Ground floor openings have segmental heads. Adjoining buttressed riding school, 6 bays, has coped gable with kneelers. North side has to left, slated lean-to addition. To right, C20 barn door opening. Interior has chamfered brick segmental transverse arches and principal rafter roof. Courtyard has doorways with segmental heads. East front has chamfered central arch flanked by 2 casements and 2 doors. Archway contains pair of latticed timber gates with ornamental ironwork. On each side, 2 doors. Above, off-centre gabled porch with ball finials. To left 2, and to right, single dormers. South side has central gable with segmental archway flanked by 4 pairs of round headed carriage doors. Beyond, single doors. Above, central gable with 2 casements. At each end a small dormer. West front has central gabled bay with 2 casements, flanked by 2 doors and single casements. North side has central round headed door with lamp bracket, flanked by 4 casements and 2 doors. Above, central dormer flanked by single larger dormers. Beyond, single small dormers. (NCC/js)
