Description
House. C19, incorporating a C18 house. Brick with hipped and gabled slate and pantile roofs. Ashlar dressings, plinth, first floor band, eaves band, bracketed cornice, balustrade. 5 roof and 2 gable stacks. Windows are mostly plain and margin light sashes. 3 storeys, 3 bays, square plan with wings to west and north. Main south front has moulded and panelled ashlar doorcase with shoulders and shafts, and large pierced brackets to hood, containing panelled door with overlight. Flanked by single square bay windows with shafts, cornices and balustrades, each with 3 sashes. Above, 3 sashes, and above again, 3 smaller sashes, all with moulded architraves. 2 storey, 2 bay service wing to east, has cornice, parapet, and coped gable. To south, off-centre door flanked to left by 2 casements, all with segmental heads, and to right, garage door. Above, 2 sashes. To right again, single bay brick outhouse with pantile roof and single gable stack. North front has to left C19 rear wing with 2 glazing bar sashes with segmental heads, on each floor. To right, C19 lean-to with slate roof and cogged eaves, with, to left, a glazing bar sash and to right, panelled doorcase with hood. To right again, gabled north wing, refronted C18, with first floor and eaves band. North gable has pilastered round headed opening with moulded soffit and paterae, framing a French window with flanking lights like a Venetian window. Above, a plain sash with segmental head. East front has left a sash with segmental head and Gothic tracery, and above, a sash with segmental head. Interior has living room with moulded cornice and coffered painted ceiling. Other principal rooms have moulded friezes and cornices and coffered ceilings, and moulded and reeded doorcases with friezes and cornices, all with similar patterns to those at Carlton Hall. 4 large C19 marble and stone fireplaces, one with flanking panelled fitted cupboards. Dog-leg stair with landing square and turned newels, stick balusters, ramped and scrolled handrail. Several C18 panelled and plank doors. Adjoining brick boundary wall has to south pierced ashlar balustrade and coping, 3 panelled ashlar piers with plinths, cornices and pyramidal caps, and pair of ornate cast iron gates. To north, higher wall with ashlar coping and 2 doors with segmental heads. (NCC/js)
