Description

Country house. Late C18, possibly containing an earlier core, C19 and C20. Ashlar, rendered brick and coursed rubble, with a hipped slate roof. L-plan. Late C18 garden/south front, 2 storeys, 7 bays. Set on an ashlar plinth. The central 3 bays of ashlar slightly project, have a 1st floor band and are topped by a pediment. The outer bays are rendered brick and have an ashlar parapet. 7 low glazing bar sashes, with 7 similar, smaller sashes above. The central 3 bays have 2 steps leading to the ground floor sashes and are divided by 4 Doric pilasters which support the pediment with triglyph decorated entablature. To the left, slightly set back is a narrow 1.5 storey extension. The rendered east front with ashlar parapet, 2 large rendered stacks to the front and 2 rendered ridge stacks is of 2.5 storeys and 7 bays. The right 3 bays being slightly set back. Central C20 Doric porch, doorway with double 1/2 glazed door and glazing bar overlight. Either side are 3 glazing bar sashes, that to the left of the doorway being slightly larger and that on the far right being slightly smaller. 7 glazing bar sashes above. The central sash has a C20 shouldered ashlar surround with keystone. This and the sash to its left are slightly larger. On the top floor are 7 small glazing bar sashes. To the right is a rendered, set back, 2 storey extension, with a hipped slate roof and single rendered gable stack, having a single glazing bar Yorkshire sash on the 1st floor. To the rear are C19 and C20 extensions. Interior has a good suite of 4 rooms. All with good moulded door surrounds, panelled mahogany doors and ornate cornices. The drawing room has a fluted dado with a decorated fireplace with Bacchio carved panels. The octagonal morning room with corner cupboads has a c.1810 decoratively carved fireplace. There is a coffered, barrel vaulted, ante-room with Corinthian 1/2 columns and a dining room with a moulded arch at the far end and Corinthian pilasters and screens. This room has a marble fireplace with decorated oversill. The colonnaded staircase hall with moulded cornice has a branching staircase with wooden balusters, decorated tread ends and panelled soffits. On the first floor there is a single room with a moulded cornice, dado and door surrounds decorated with patera. (NCC/js)
