Description

Enclosure and outbuildings. Late C18. Dressed coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. Quadrangle-plan. West side, 9 bays. Set on a plinth. Central archway with ashlar quoins. Arch with feature voussoirs, projecting keystone and imposts extending to an impost band. Moulded cornice over. Flanked by single walls each with 3 recessed, arched panels with stone archivolts and various openings. These terminate in single, slightly projecting, higher outbuildings with pyramidal pantile roofs. Each with similar single arched panel. The left outbuilding has a doorway with wooden door in flush ashlar surround with keystone. Above, a slatted wooden opening with glazing bar overlight in flush ashlar surround. The right outbuilding has a single glazing bar casement. Above, a glazing bar fixed light in flush ashlar surround. The north side has a central 2 storey barn with hipped pantile roof. Slightly projecting central bay containing 2 storey archway with stone archivolt, keystone and impost bands. To the right is a doorway with flush ashlar surround and keystone, above are 2 doorways with wooden doors and flush ashlar surrounds. There are 2 cross ventilators on the ground floor and 4 above. To the right, set back, is a single storey wall with ashlar coping and doorway with wooden door. This terminates in a 2 storey, slightly projecting, outbuilding with pyramidal pantile roof. Having a 2 storey, arched, recessed panel with stone archivolt and impost band. Single fixed light and single blocked opening. Above, a doorway. All with flush ashlar surrounds. Left of the barn, set back, is a further single storey wall with ashlar coping and doorway. Terminating in a similar outbuilding with blocked openings. To the left of this is a single storey outbuilding with hipped pantile roof and ashlar quoins. The east side retains a similar central arch to the west side, but otherwise has additions and alterations. The quadrangle is completed on the south side by the house. (NCC/js)
