Description

Stabling, now flats and garages, and lodge, c.1860. Ashlar. Shaped tile roofs. Coped gables with kneelers and mannerist style orb finials. Many stacks. Moulded eaves bands. Set on a plinth. Quadrangle plan with wing to the rear right and lodge projecting from the rear right of this, thus forming a secondary, smaller quadrangle. One and a half storeys. South front, main quadrangle, 6 bays. Central projecting gabled bay with central vermiculated rusticated carriage archway and bracket keystone, flanked by single vermiculated rusticated pilasters supporting an architrave with 2 similar half finials. Either side are 3 large arched doorways with panelled wooden doors, rusticated surrounds and keystones. Above is a single glazing bar sash in raised ashlar surround with keystone and decorative ashlar scroll at each corner, 2 consoles support a slightly projecting hood with decorative strapwork over. Flanked by 2 small glazing bar sashes. The projecting 8 bay wings have similar doorways and fenestration. Completing the quadrangle is a coped wall broken by central pair of piers. The east front of 13 bays has 2 projecting gabled bays each with single glazing bar sash, keystone, flanking marginal sashes and single vermiculated rusticated pilasters with architrave and orbs over. The southern most bay has a further pair of vermiculated rusticated pilasters between sash and marginal sashes. Above are single glazing bar sashes in similar surrounds to that of the centre south. Remaining openings are either glazing bar sashes or recessed panels. Attached via a coped wall with Tudor style arched doorway is a single storey plus attic 3 bay lodge. West front with central gabled bay. Central 2-light casement with Tudor style arched doorway and hood mould to the left, and single similar, smaller casements to the right and above. Casements with drip moulds. Attached to the right via a C20 lean-to is a single, gabled 2 storey bay. Beyond, to the right, is a coped wall, and behind is the secondary courtyard which has several glazing bar sashes, carriage doorways in rusticated surrounds with keystones and doorways with rusticated jambs and keystones. The right wing of the quadrangle, with glazing bar sashes and recessed panels, projects and has a single central projecting gabled bay similar to the centre south front. (NCC/js)
