Description

Hotel. Mid C18, early C19 front with late C19 alterations. Stucco. Hipped slate roof. 3 stucco stacks. Cornice with panelled parapet. Quadrangle plan built around a courtyard. Main front set on a plinth to the left. 2 storeys, 7 bays. The central 3 bays slightly project. Central doorway, double glazing bar door flanked by single reeded pilaster strips with patera further flanked by single glazing bar marginal lights and single reeded pilaster strips. Extending over is a cornice. The wide Doric porch with 2 stone steps to the doorway has a wrought iron balcony over. Either side are single late C19 canted bays each with entablature and 3 glazing bar sashes. Further left are 2 glazing bar sashes in reveals. Further right is a single similar sash and reveal, a doorway with panelled door and on the far right a late C19 shop front comprising large tripartite cross shop window flanked by single pilasters which support an entablature. Above are 7 glazing bar sashes in moulded frames. The south front, facing Newcastle Street, has 2 rendered stacks and is set on a plinth. 2 storeys, 6 bays. 3 glazing bar sashes with segmental carriage archway to the left and further left 2 sashes. Above, single glazing bar sash, to the left are 3 narrower glazing bar sashes, 2 small sashes and further left a single sash with marginal glazing bars. Attached to the left is a lower 2 storey whitewashed brick and pantile 2 bay wing with dentil eaves. Single sash with marginal glazing bars and to the left a carriageway with flat arch. Above, a single glazing bar sash with a single sash to the left. (NCC/js)
