Description
Outbuilding to Thurgaton Incorporation Workhouse. 1824, altered c1870 and reduced C20. Designed by William Nicholson. Red brick with slate roofs. South front has 11 windows arranged 2:4:5, central section, 2 storey, flanking wings single storey. Left wing added c1870, has 2 tall cross casement windows and a rinsed ridge skylight with 3 windows. Central section has doors at either end with overlights and between 2 windows, that to the left with an iron glazing bar flame and that to the right blocked, above 3 small windows with iron glazing bar frames and a blocked window. Right wing has a door, a large window with iron glazing bar frame, then another door and beyond two smaller, similar windows. North front has similar 10 window facade. This building is an important part of the original plan of this very early workhouse. (NCC/js)
