Description
Memorial cross. 1798. Dressed gritstone. Square base with octagonal-sectioned cross with domed ends, cross inscribed to south 'Fear God Honour the King ... 1798...Nile' and to north, 'Love one Another'. Base inscribed to south, 'Deedes Not Wordes/God Save the Queen/Victorian Jubilee July 20 1897'. The other sides are inscribed 'swear not at all', 'Thou shalt not covet' and 'Drink the ruin of millions'. Originally part of a group of memorials to the Battle of the Nile, erected by the owner of the Thoresby Estate, who was a naval officer. (NCC/js)
