Description

Railway bridge. 1847-49. Designed by John Fowler. Cast iron, coursed rubble stone brick and ashlar dressings. Bridge of 2 equal box girder spans supported on single central pier and double side piers. Central pier has rusticated, rounded cut waters and pier with rusticated quoins, moulded base and entablature topped with blocking course and pyramidal cap. Each end has similar double piers with between moulded round arches with keystones and a moulded band above, internal arches brick. This is a rare and early example of a box girder bridge. The eastern half of this bridge falls within the parish of Torksey. See item No 2/79, Torksey, Lincs. (NCC/js)
