Description

Public library. 1887. Paid for by J. E. Ellis and H. B. Paget. Brick with plain tile roofs. Ashlar dressings, chamfered plinth, moulded string course, dentillated eaves, shouldered coped gables. Renaissance revival style. 3 gable and 2 side wall stacks. Single and 2 storeys, 5 bays wide. Windows are leaded mullioned casements. Front has central buttressed and pilastered tower porch with pyramid roof. Central keystoned Tudor arched doorway flanked by single shoe scrapers. Above, frieze with large bracket lamp. Above it, 2 casements with keystoned heads and tympanum containing Arms and date. To left, canted 2 storey bay window with balustrade. Above it, gable with casement with brackets and swan neck pediment with ball finials. Beyond to left, inscribed datestone. To right, 3 bay wing with 3 casements. Above, shaped gabled dormer with side brackets, segmental pediment and monogram tablet. Buttressed east side, 4 bays, has, to left, C20 addition and cross wing with door flanked by single casements. To right, buttressed range with, above, small casement and central casement with monogram tablet. Interior refitted mid C20. (NCC/js)
