Description

Statue of sphinx, c.1685. By C. G. Cibber. Ashlar. Rendered, rectangular brick plinth carries moulded ashlar base and life-size statue. This is one of two sphinx at ten pounds a piece, having in them but three quarters of a tunn' which Cibber refers to in a memorandum preserved at Chatsworth where he was employed in 1687-90.
