Description

Former bank. Late C19, with mid C20 alterations. Ashlar, with granite plinth and doorcase, ashlar dressings and slate mansard roof. Single ridge and 2 gable stacks, all coped and with cornices. Baroque Revival style. Plinth, quoins, dentillated main cornice, secondary cornice, balustrade with volutes. 3 storeys plus attics; 5 x 4 bays. Corner site with angled corner entrance bay. Entrance bay, topped with a lead dome and stone finial, has a doorcase with dentillated cornice and heavily rusticated Doric columns, containing a cross panelled double door. Above, a round-arched recess with hood on pilasters, and above it, a plain sash with bracketed sill and scroll keystone. Above again, a round-arched window with panelled surround and keystone. Left front, to Church Street, has the lower 2 floors articulated by Doric half-columns on tall rusticated pedestals. 5 plain sashes with moulded surrounds and keyblocks, and aprons with festoons. Ground floor has round-arched single-pane windows with fanlights, rusticated voussoirs and scroll keystones. Second floor has 5 plain sashes with small cornices, divided by panelled pilasters. Attic has 4 shouldered round-headed dormers with 2-light glazing bar casements. Right front, to Market Place, has 3 bays of the same design, with 2 dormers to the attic. To right, a slightly projecting entrance bay with a recessed doorway under a scroll keystone. Above it, a semicircular window with rusticated voussoirs. Above, a plain sash with keyblock and apron, under a triangular pediment. Above again, a plain sash with moulded surround and segmental pediment, under a stepped parapet.
