Description

Manor House. Mid C17. Brick, rendered and whitewashed, with interlocking tile roofs of unequal pitches. Some dentillated eaves, 1 gable and 2 valley stacks. 2 storeys plus garrets, 2 bays, double depth square plan. Main west front has off-centre panelled timber doorcase with curved brackets to hood, flanked by single windows. Above, 2 windows. All windows are glazing bar sashes with C19 moulded architraves. North gable has to left, C20 casement and to right, C19 square bay window with slate roof and 5 casements. Above, a casement to left. Above again, a casement to left and a glazing bar sash to right. South front has to right, C20 French window with flanking lights, flanked to left by a glazing bar sash and to right by a casement. Beyond, to left, a large C20 casement. Rear elevation has irregular fenestration including a round headed stair light. Adjoining rear wing and single storey outbuilding, 2 plus single bays, have C20 garage doors and fenestration. Interior has noteworthy 3 storey dogleg oak staircase, C17, said to be from Mering House. Half-round moulded handrail intersecting with deep moulded string. Square newels and knob finials and drops. Turned balusters with square heads and feet. Matching landing balustrade. Fielded oak staircase panelling. Some stud walls. Front roof pitch largely rebuilt, with struts to principal rafters. Chamfered timbers, renoned purlins and pole joists. Rear roof has heavy principal rafters with tenoned purlins. 3 hewn span beams and fireplace bressummer, with remains of stops. 2 chamfered span beams. Classical style timber and marble fireplace from Ossington Hall. Several early C19 panelled doors. (NCC/js)
