Description

Office building with shops to ground floor. Dated 1901, with mid and late C20 alterations. Brick with ashlar dressings; roof not visible. First-floor band and string course, main cornice with breaks, pierced balustrade with moulded coping. 3 storeys; 7-window range. 3 bays. Windows are mainly composite sashes with plain lower lights and glazing bar upper lights. Central bay has flanking pilasters rising through the cornice and topped with pedestals and ball finials. Canted stone oriel window with 3 sashes. Above, a tripartite sash with brick pilasters, fronted by a small canted balcony with floral panels. Above again, a plain parapet with tablet inscribed "Imperial Buildings", topped with a coped pediment dated 1901.Side bays have similar flanking pilasters and on each floor a tripartite sash. Between floors, aprons with floral panels. Ground floor has 3 shop fronts, mid and late C20, within original granite-faced plinth and pilasters with enriched capitals. Fluted curved brackets topped with pediments, carrying a continuous cornice with central break. The cornice and brackets are painted. (EH)
