Description

Pharmaceutical factory for dry processes and packaging. 1938. By Sir E Owen Williams for The Boots Company. Reinforced concrete. External piers carrying roof beams and supporting cantilever beams over storage areas and loading docks. Internal square and Y-form columns and continuous floor slabs. Flat and potent glazed north light roofs. Deep projecting floor boards and cornice. Metal framed strip glazing and casements. Single, 5 and 6 storeys. 18 bays long. Rectangular plan with cantilevered storage area and loading dock on each long side. Asymmetrical south west end has projecting central section with canted 6 storey lift and stair tower flanked by single storey parapeted office suite. Canted central bay with slit casements, flanked by steps with 3 triangular aprons and by single doors with overlights. Beyond, single canted windows. Beyond, 3 casements. Above, tower has on each floor 2 canted casements. Flanked by single casements. To left, setback bay. To right, cantilevered canopy over carpark. South east side has continuous loading dock with concrete fascia above. North west side has to left, 2 projecting hoist towers each with a pair of setback flanking wings. Interior has entrance hall with 2 coved columns and deep faience dado. Stepped ceiling with flush bronze lights. Cantilevered concrete stairs around lift shafts. Small rectangular light wells. This building is notable for the use of an external concrete frame to support both the roof and cantilevered wings. A similar principle is used at Boots' Fire Station, 1938, and the Empire Pool, Wembley, 1936. See also City of Nottingham List. (NCC/js)
