Reasons for Designation
Laneham war memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20; * Architectural Interest: the memorial is thoughtfully designed with good carved detailing; * Group value: with the listed Willow Tree Cottage (Grade II) which is in close proximity.
History
The war memorial, in remembrance of men from Laneham lost in the First World War, was unveiled on 25 May 1922 by Mr EE Harcourt Vernon of Grove Hall and dedicated by the Archdeacon of Newark, the Ven Egbert Hacking. It was designed and made by Sharpe and Hoggard (of Retford) at a cost of £110 and erected on land given by Mr Rogers.

The memorial comprises a 2m high Scottish granite obelisk with a flared plinth on a two-stage base carrying the memorial inscription. That reads ERECTED TO THE/ MEMORY OF THE MEN/ FROM THIS PARISH WHO/ ENTERED INTO REST/ HAVING FOUGHT THE GOOD/ FIGHT IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 (names).
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the memorial stands within a small enclosure comprising a metre-high stone-coped, whitewashed, wall to the rear and, to the front, iron railings with a gate to the centre.
