Description
Coal-fired power station and cooling towers, commissioned 1967-8, officially opened 1969, designed by Architects Design Group (ADG) from Baker Street, Nottingham (architects in charge were rex Savage & John Gelsthorpe, assisted by Norman Simpson); comprises main generator/turbine building, two 200m high chimneys and 8 cooling towers (106.7m tall, built by Davenport Engineering Ltd. of Bradford); West Burton was the first 2000MW station in the UK; the layout of West Burton was carried out using a pioneering modelling technique using a heliodon, a practice that was then used for all subsequent power stations and is still carried out today for tall structure groupings such as wind turbines
