Description
Office building with clock tower. c1860. Red brick and render with ashlar dressings. Slate hipped roofs. Moulded first floor band, and eaves cornice. 2 storey office with 3 storey clock tower to the north west. South east, river front has a pair of 3 light windows within an ashlar arcade with 7 round arches and 6 columns. Above a similar pair of windows within an arcaded surround. Above a pyramidal hipped roof with a continuous dormer window, each face has 10 lights with circular glazing. The roof is crowned by a tall triple chimney stack. North east front has an off-centre C20 doorway with to the left a canted bay window and the right a former round headed doorway with inserted windows beyond 2 segment head windows. Above a further pair of 3 light windows within an ashlar, arcaded surround. Set back to the right a round headed doorway with flanking side lights, and a single round headed window to the right, above a double and a single round headed window, all with moulded ashlar surrounds. North west front has a single blocked doorway in an ashlar surround, and an inserted C20 doorway to the right, above a single round headed window in ashlar surround. South west front has 2 round head windows, and above a single and a double round headed window plus a pair of 3 light windows within an arcaded surround. Over the slightly projecting off-centre bay rises a single stage, rendered, square clock tower. Each front is articulated with 2 pairs of Doric pilasters flanking a central round headed sash window, and topped by a full entablature. Above an ornate gable with round clock face. Above in a pyramidal roof a round headed lucarne. The whole topped by an iron balustrade and a flag pole. (EH)
