Description

Former Congregational church, now antiques centre. 1822, with early C20 addition, converted late C20. By W Wallen. Brick with stone and painted brick dressings and slate roof. Classical Revival style. Windows are wooden cross casements. 2 storeys. 3x5 bays. Pilastered front has first floor band and pediment containing a blank circle. 3 tall round headed windows. Below, central segment headed window flanked by single pedimented stucco porches with plain 2-leaf doors. Sides have full-height round headed blind arcades with tall round headed windows above and smaller segment headed windows below. To north east, an early C20 single storey addition with part-glazed roof. Interior has panelled oval gallery on round tapered cast iron columns, and shallow segment arched ceiling with central boss and moulded cornice. East end has traceried moulded elliptical arch with Corinthian pilasters. Behind this, former organ gallery with 3 round headed blank recesses. West end has entrance porches with softwood dogleg stairs. Early C20 addition has 5 small rooms radiating from the end of a corridor, with glazed screens between them. (EH)
