Description

In order to obtain information about the date of the ancient field systems [apparent on AP's], excavations were carried out at weekends in the autumn of 1976 at four sites in Nottinghamshire. AP's showed a complex of small ditched enclosures and other features, suggesting a settlement, bounded on the southern side by a pair of ditches and integrated within a widespread field system defined by single ditches. ...cuttings were laid out close to and parallel with the hedge, Cutting 1 across the double ditch on the edge of the settlement, and Cutting 2 across the line of a single ditch apparently defining the southern side of an early field to the south.
