Description
The first excavations decided upon were trenches traversing the paddock within the moat to the NE of the farm buildings. Their object was to strike any wall foundations which might remain in this area and to establish their run and date of erection. No such foundations were met. One of these trenches was run to the inner lip of the ditch. A cutting through the moat is at the moment in the course of being made. (1)
It was decided as a first excavation on this site (though see above) to make a section through the ditch to establish its structure. This section was completed. It was not possible in the time available to carry the section back to the lip of the ditch on either side, as was obviously desirable… Another trench was cut 20yds N of the first one (not fully excavated), to discover the revetting here also, at a rather higher level.
