Description

The laying of a new sewer pipe between South Scarle pumping station and the existing mains at Besthorpe …[resulted in the inspection of] a total of 1220.5m of trench averaging 0.4m wide and 1.2m deep … cut in the middle of or alongside the road. Two trenches were cut … one kilometre apart. … The watching brief revealed nothing of archaeological interest. The topsoil, which could possibly have yielded medieval and post medieval finds had already been removed by earlier pipe laying and road building. In any case, the natural layers were not far below the surface, and had not been disturbed by archaeological features such as ditches and banks. (1) Grid ref for western end of trench. See also E8990 for trench two.
