Description

The suspected line of the supposed Roman road was projected between the W limit of the known stretch and the stone marking the site of the bridge remains (see M4286) … excavation of a trench (T01, at SK 8116 6120, 48 x 3m, excavated to natural gravel) across this line. The aim being to demonstrate whether or not a Roman road did exist. A small cutting (T04) was also made across a low bank whose presence close to the line was only noticed during the course of the fieldwork. The natural deposits (including palaeochannel with wood fragments) exposed in T01 all appeared undisturbed by human activity and no cultural artefacts were recovered. (1) See E9089 for trenches 02 and 03, E9090 for geophysics on this area.
