Description

The proposed extension was to rest on a slab to minimise ground disturbance and an archaeological watching brief was carried out during the contractors excavations. Elevations of the Georgian period brick walls bounding the yard on the SE and SW sides were considered worthy of a summary record prior to destruction. The site was cleared to the formation level (350mm below existing ground surface) by the contractors. In addition, three trenches, each about 40cm wide were excavated for a further depth of about 30cm and a deeper hole irregular in plan was excavated apparently for drains in the N corner of the site. Cleaning was limited to the bases of the N and S trenches and the pit. (1)
