Description

Internal alterations to the tower of All Hallows Church required the temporary dismantling of cupboards and panelling masking the internal tower walls and the lowering of of the stone slab floor with the removal of underlying deposits to 0.5m below the existing floor surface. … At the point where JSAC were called in, the contractors' work was well advanced … a stone TOMB [sic] had been moved from the N aisle, the floor had been lifted in the tower and adjacent area of the N aisle and most of the sub floor deposits had been removed to the top of undisturbed strata, in which parts of two burials were visible [sic]. (1) See E9183 for archaeological excavation, E9184 for watching brief.
