Description

Watching brief on a number of small test pits excavated for the placement of equipment for seismic investigations. Two main lines of test pits were dug. Line 2 ran approximately 150m W of and adjacent to the Fosse Way. It began in the fields between High Thorpe and Lings Farm, ran down to the A52 and continued on the N side of the road to Newton Airfield. ... Each of the test pits were excavated with a mini excavator using a narrow toothed bucket. Each pit was approximately 1m x 0.6m wide and 70 - 80 cm deep. The pits were located in the hedgerow ditches of the grass verge where possible. … No evidence was recovered in any of the test pits of deposits or features of archaeological interest.
