Description

Archaeological investigations carried out at the site consisted of … evaluation trenches. Trenches 2 and 3 were positioned to investigate the central mound, 4 and 5 the S mound, 4, 6 and 7 to check to [sic] possible line of the Roman road and trench 5 the possible alternative line of the Ro road. Each trench was machine excavated, using a 360 excavator with a toothless dyking bucket, to the top of the first recognisable archaeological horizon Trench 1 - 9 … failed to find any archaeological remains. A depth of modern fill over the whole site of at least 2.5m. The total absence of remains, together with the borehole evidence for the gravel ridge in the SE corner of the field, suggests that a more likely route for the road was on the higher ground, and that its route may always have deviated to echo the bend in the river Trent. Evaluation in the compound and garden behind the White House meant that only a short trench could be dug across the presumed line of the Civil War defences. The high level of the water table meant that only modern deposits were encountered . Whether the defences or external ditch are still to be found is unclear. However, trench 8 was 2m deep and failed to encounter anything but modern remains. (1) See E9364 for topographic survey.
