Description

Drainage contractors, operating on behalf of Mr. Grice, the landowner, accidentally cut about 70m of drainage trenches spaced at 20m intervals, through a scheduled area adjacent to the Fosse Way. Trenches were about 100mm wide and frequently appeared to penetrate the subsoil, but were too narrow to see any details of archaeological stratigraphy. The deepest recorded trench was cut to c.500mm below surface level. Trenching extended well beyond the scheduled area, covering a total of about 7.5ha. (1) See E9352 for field walking, carried out following this disturbance.
