It was decided that the working party would re-examine the condition of the Viaduct. Various inspections were carried out, culminating in a full working day when a body of 27 volunteer workers was assembled. The underside of the deck of the viaduct was examined at close quarters from walkways and by climbing along lattice girders. The upper surface of the deck was examined by digging out ballast to expose the ends of deck troughs at 100 positions. An extensive photographic record of the investigation was made.
