Nine evaluation trenches were excavated, each initially 10 x 3m in plan (trenches 1-7, 14 and 15; the omitted nuimbers refer to geomorphological test pits). The overburden was removed by machine under archaeological supervision in successive level spits of about 400mm down to the upper surface of deposits of archaeological significance, or natural ground whichever was the higher. The positioning of the trenches aimed to generally assess the nature, extent and condition of archaeological remains on this previously largely uninvestigated site. (1) See E102 for earlier trenching.
