Description

Five trenches were excavated. Conditions were very dry, which made excavation very difficult in the sandy subsoils. All the trenches were 10 x 3m initially. Ploughsoil was removed by machine, using a toothless ditching bucket. Trench 10 was placed on the W flank of the sand dune. No archaeological features were observed. Trench 11 was placed on the summit to investigate a cluster of Saxo-Norman pottery. An extension was dug. Trench 12 was placed on top of the dune in an area where later medieval pottery had been recovered but no earlier, or Saxo-Norman, types. No archaeological features were observed. Trench 13 was placed on the E slope of the dune to investigate a cluster of Saxo-Norman pottery. No archaeological features were observed. Trench 14 was placed over the find spot of a sherd of early Saxon ware. No archaeological features were observed. (1) See E9392 , E9394, E9395 for fieldwalking, watching brief and metal detecting.
