Description

The proposed Girton Northern Extension comprises some 70ha on the floodplain and terrace edge blanketed by sand dunes on the E side of the Trent. 40ha used for arable cultivation and the majority of this was available for walking in Jan and Apr 1997. The fields were walked in transects spaced at 10m intervals. All finds of medieval or earlier date were collected and their positions recorded. In the survey on the lower lying areas, the positions of post medieval material (pottery, clay-pipe etc., but not brick or land drain fragments) were also recorded, but this material was not collected. (1) See E9397,8 for test pits, E9399,9400 for geophys.
