Description

Three trenches (18, 19 and 20 - the rest in S Yorks) were excavated in area F. Topsoil and overburden were removed by a tracked 360 excavator using a toothless bucket to the top of archaeological or natural deposits under direct archaeological supervision. Trench 18, 10 x 10m, exposed two features … of geological origin. Trench 19 was placed over the location of a flint flake. Two fragments of brick or tile, two unworked flint fragments and a small piece of clay pipe was all that was recovered. … Trench 20 measured 10 x 10m and was located over a second geophysical anomaly. No features were observed that could have caused the geophysical anomaly. (1) See E9414 for fieldwalking, E9412 for geophysical survey.
