Description

Prior to the commencement of topsoil stripping, a trench c.40m long by 2m wide was mechanically excavated parallel with Slaynes Lane to verify the relationship between sand ridge and any adjacent peat deposits. In light of the results, the topsoil and shallow peat within the phase 2 area were stripped in a single operation. All exposed timbers were allocated a separate number and recorded. Areas of palaeosol surface across the site were hand excavated in an attempt to identify and collect any lithic material which might have been present. This resulted in the recovery of only two unworked flint nodules. (1) See E 9419 for fieldwalking, E9424 for Phase 1, E9450 for Phase 3.
