Description

The watching brief was carried out during the stripping of Field 5 prior to its use as a storage area during construction. Further archaeological attendance was carried out during the stripping of the area around the knoll in Field 1, the haul road in Field 2 and during the excavation of trenches for drainage across Fields 1 and 3. The ground works in these areas were carried out using a large tracked excavator. ... Field 5 was stripped of topsoil to a depth of c.0.3m, no archaeological features were revealed. The site was visited during Feb to observe the stripping of the upper soils across the site and excavation of the balancing ponds (Field 1). No archaeological features were observed. Further visits were made in April, May and September to observe trenching for dainage pipes. The trench was c 300m long and ran broadly N-S across an archaeologically sensitive part of Field 3. The initial excavation of the trench was excavated and back-filled prior to any observation by an archaeologist, however a new trench was excavated enabling observation of any archaeological deposits. The work included the stripping of an area of turf around 4m wide, followed by the trench itself which was c 0.5m wide and c 1.2m deep. (1) Grid ref centred, see report for the various areas covered. See E9446 for evaluation of Field 4, E9447 for excavation on road lines.
