Description

Following demolition of various concrete, brick and asbestos buildings to the rear of Clerkson's Hall and removal of rubble and hard standing, a site visit was made. Bedrock was exposed over most of the site. To ensure that no features of archaeological interest were cut into the bedrock but obscured, a strip was scraped across the site by JCB using a toothless ditching bucket. Apart from two modern drains, nothing had been cut into bedrock. The area around Clerkson's Hall had been terraced into the hillside by about 1m, the area to the N had also been terraced by at least 0.5m into the natural slope of the land. (1)
