Description

The new building was to consist of strip footings c.1m wide excavated through topsoil and overburden to natural gravel, and measured 35 x 20m. During excavation for the pumping station the section was clearly disturbed to the gravel base. A steam plough had been used regularly to a depth of 1m to break up a pan. Test pitting on the line of the proposed outer walls … the new building, together with the existing new [sic] sports pitches lie on an area of artificially raised ground. During the excavations for the remaining wall footings the general depth of disturbance was confirmed and no features penetrating the natural gravel subsoil were revealed. (1)
