Description

Trial trenching and test pitting was undertaken in the area of borrow pit 1 to examine the high point in the gravels. Coring was used to investigate borrow pit 2. This examined the extent of made ground and searched for archaeologically important deposits at depth. Test pitting was used to confirm the coring data provided by ABB and examine the relationship between the made ground and alluvium in greater detail. … established the presence of deposits containing well preserved palæoenvironmental remains of local to regional importance. No evidence for prehistoric or later settlement on the gravel island in borrow pit 1, but a probable oxbow lake containing early BA peat deposit. Made ground in borrow pit 2 represent a series of different made ground deposits of recent origin generally between 1 and 3m deep. (1)
