Description

Stripping of the existing soft surfaces of the site was carried out to sufficient depth to remove the living organic component of the soils. During the stripping of area 35 excavation came close to intact archaeological levels, and the excavation level was therefore raised as it progressed to the bowling green area. A detailed plan of area 35 was drawn up; elsewhere recording was limited to plotting finds and concentrations of other material. (1) See E102 for 1973-4 excavations, E9376 for evaluation, E9540 for watching brief/trenches.
