Description
This report provides an assessment of the archaeological potential and possible impacts of a proposed development at Worksop Sewage Treatment Works.
The only known archaeological remains within 1km of the site are cropmarks to the north-east, which have been tentatively dated to the Roman era and Rayton Farm which has its origins in the medieval period. The lack of archaeological evidence may be due to a lack of archaeological investigation in the area rather than a genu-ine lack of archaeological remains. The majority of the site comprises agricultural fields and the Ryton River Valley floodplain indicating that potential archaeological remains (if present) are likely to be well preserved.
The study contains a search of the NHER database within a 1km radius of the proposed development site. An examination of local, regional and national planning policies, topographical evidence, maps relevant to the site as well as a map regression exercise. An assessment of existing impact and truncation on the site. Relevant archaeological sources and a review of documents held within the local studies library at Worksop were considered. A site visit also took place.
