Description

This archaeological desk based assessment has been prepared in support of a planning application for proposed development on land at Halam Road/Allenby Road, Westhorpe, Southwell, Nottinghamshire. The study has highlighted archaeological features; undated earthworks comprising a bank or possible enclosure boundary with remains of ridge and furrow to the south-west of the site, ridge and furrow remains also lie to the North of the site. Though it is suggested that these features may have already been ploughed out. There is little archaeological evidence of any activity on the site prior to the medieval features mentioned. However, there are significant finds and features in the surrounding area. A map regression took place and this identified that during the earlier part of the 19th century the site was divided into 5 separate plots. The study also contains results and photographs from a site visit and details of aerial photography. The report concludes that there is a low potential for archaeology in the area with the acceptance of post medieval field/plot boundaries.
