Description
In July 2009, documentary and cartographic research was conducted on Gamston Manor.
The present Gamston Manor structure was constructed at some date prior to 1648. The likely owners of the manor of Gamston in the Anglo-Saxon and medieval period appear to have been numerous, although there are close connections to the de Maresey family in the 12th and 13th centuries, and the Thurland/Holles and Earl of Clare families from 1544 onwards. The 1648 lease is also the earliest documentary source to date the construction of Gamston Manor, and suggests a mid 17th century, rather than late 17th century date for the extant house. The original structure of Gamston Manor was likely constructed under the guidance of the Holles and Earl of Clare family. The structure was also extended and altered during the late 18th and 20th centuries.
The report contains historic maps of the site.
