Description

A desk-based assessment was carried out in order to assess the archaeological potential of land north of Abbey Lane, Aslockton, Nottinghamshire, in advance of the submission of a planning application for the construction of a new residential housing development. The study is based on a range of primary and secondary sources including a search of the Nottinghamshire Historic Environment Record, historic maps and online resources. Evidence suggests the site has been in use throughout archaeological periods. Features include; Iron Age/Roman crop mark, a single Anglo Saxon burial (which could indicate a formerly more extensive cemetery). Medieval moated enclosures are present at Canmer’s Mound and possible traces of ridge and furrow were recorded during a site visit. The report concludes that the site has moderate archaeological potential of local significance – with the greatest interest being in the potential later prehistoric crop mark. A map regression exercise and site visit took place as part of the study, accompanying images are within the report.
