Description

“The aim of the desk-based assessment was to consider the wealth and potential of archaeolog-ical and historical sites encompassed by the 44km by 1km assessment site. As a result, possible areas of archaeological significance requiring further investigation are at Scarthing Moor, Scarcliffe, Moorhouse, Laxton and Glapwell Ridge where the proposed line of pylons crosses close to pre-historic findspots. The sites of Sookholme Bath (Roman tile kiln) and King’s Stand Farm may prove to be significant Roman sites. In terms of later archaeology and historical sites, the DMV at Nettleworth and the post-medieval shrunken village to the south of Laxton are also of potential importance. The assessment of im-pacts caused by the refurbishment of the overhead electricity line also considers the likelihood of earthwork features relating to manorial estates and deer parks, particularly at Pleasley Park. Although few archaeological excavations have been undertaken in the area, much of the pylon route is rela-tively sterile in terms of known and potential archaeology and it is suggested that there need only be mitigation or limited intrusive archaeological work at sites mentioned above, as part of Phases 2 and 3 of the project”. The report contains an in depth discussion of each archaeological periods and a map regression exercise. A comprehensive list of documentary sources were consulted to inform this report.
