This document details the results of an archaeological investigation at Glebe House, Church Road, Harby. A planning application for a new detached garage at the property is under preparation; the Archaeology Officer for Nottinghamshire County Council advised that the archaeological potential of the site is unknown, therefore more information was needed to assist the planning process. Early occupation at Harby is currently poorly understood. An Iron Age industrial/domestic site c. 250m east of Glebe House was partially revealed during monitoring on a pipeline, and scatters of prehistoric flint and early Roman pottery have been found in the area. Glebe House lies in the former garden of Harby Vicarage, which was built in the late 19th century at the same time as the church was rebuilt. The original parish church in Harby dated from the 13th century, and lay close to the manor house, the moated earth-works of which lie less than 100m to the south-east of the site. The site therefore lies at the core of the historic village. The initial phase of excavation involved reducing the internal ground level for the proposed garage by approximately 0.25m. This incorporated the whole footprint of the development as well as some extra ground on the edges. During this part of the excavation the only exposed horizon was topsoil (100), which contained lots of roots and modern waste. The next phase involved excavating the footing trenchess for the garage. These were exca-vated a further 0.9m from the lowered internal level. These trenches exposed a sequence of subsoil, which contained modern waste material, and the natural substrate the natural sub-strate was only exposed in the SE corner of the excavation. The report concludes that No archaeological features or deposits were recorded during ex-cavations of the footing trenches/ground reduction. The reduction of the internal ground level did not penetrate the base of the topsoil, and the footing trenches only exposed an alluvial subsoil that contained frequent modern waste material. Overall, the results indicate that the development will have little or no impact upon any significant archaeology. No significant finds were recovered from the site. The report contains technical drawings of the site, section drawings and photos taken during the excavation.
