Description
The study area (totalling c.19.9ha in size) comprises three elements; a larger area to the south and west of Slough Dyke and two smaller areas to the northeast of the existing quarry, both covered by large soil bunds.
The Scheduled Ancient Monument of a Roman marching camp lies 350m to the south of the study area, whilst no features are recorded within the study area significant remains are known to lie adja-cent to and may extend into the proposed development area.
The study refers to previous investigation during which the potential remains of a large palaeochannel running along the line of Slough Dyke were identified. This channel was found to contain significant palaeo-environmental and cultural evidence of Prehistoric to Romano-British date within fills of peat and clay. Along the southern edge of the existing quarry ancient redeposited tree trunks or bog oaks were found, suggesting woodland clearance. Bronze Age and Neolithic activity has been recorded at Langford and Girton quarries to the north of the site. The report suggests that the bog oak could date to this period. A possible prehistoric trackway towards the north end of the study area is also discussed.
The study refers to previous excavations within the study area which revealed remains listed as prehistoric flint scatters and pits, Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery, Iron Age ditched enclosures, round-houses, stack stands and other artefacts such as Romano-British field systems, Anglo-Saxon sunken floored buildings, pits, pottery, metalwork and glass beads. The report concludes that areas of the site have significant archaeological potential especially from Pre-historic to Anglo-Saxon periods.
The report consulted sources such as NCC HER, BGS, Air photographs and historic maps. A “rapid” field walk survey also took place.
